About this role
Senior Backend Engineer for GitLab's Portfolio Experience team, building and evolving the work items platform that serves millions of work items across tens of thousands of groups and projects. Focus on Ruby on Rails backend, PostgreSQL performance at scale, and portfolio planning capabilities.
Must have
Experience representing user perspective while working through trade-offs with product managers and engineers
Experience leading projects involving several engineers over multiple months
Full stack experience with current backend focus and proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails
Strong PostgreSQL skills and experience improving database performance at scale
Experience designing and evolving GraphQL and/or RESTful APIs with attention to scalability
Experience improving large automated test suites including performance and reliability
Strong written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous distributed environment
Experience integrating artificial intelligence into development workflows

Responsibilities
Collaborate with product and engineers to shape requirements and break complex projects into shippable iterations
Design and implement backend and real-time features in GitLab monolith including GraphQL and RESTful APIs
Build and evolve portfolio planning capabilities including work item hierarchy and status rollup
Improve PostgreSQL performance at scale through query optimization indexing and partitioning
Create proofs of concept for complex work and maintain extensive automated test coverage
Mentor engineers and open source contributors through code reviews pairing and regular feedback
Participate in on-call rotations and troubleshoot production issues
