About this role

Lead architecture and product direction for CodePath's Ruby-based learning platform serving 40,000+ students. Drive migration from Sinatra to Rails, integrate AI/ML for adaptive learning, and scale systems to reach hundreds of thousands of learners. High-ownership role shaping technical decisions across the full stack.

Must have

10+ years of software engineering experience including at least 5 years with Ruby on Rails

Familiarity with Claude Code or similar development tools and related best practices

Strong PostgreSQL and database design skills including complex queries and indexing strategies

Reasonable working familiarity with the full web stack from infrastructure to CSS

Demonstrated ability to lead technical decisions in a small autonomous team environment

Strong written and verbal communication skills with non-engineer stakeholders

Passion for education and desire to make a positive impact

Responsibilities

Architect and build web applications across Ruby on Rails Sinatra and Django

Make consequential technical decisions on infrastructure data modeling and API design

Set code quality bar through reviews architectural guidance and constructive feedback

Write automated tests that reflect real edge cases not just coverage targets

Identify performance bottlenecks and systemic issues before they become outages

Mentor other engineers and raise the technical ceiling of the team

Lead migration of core platform components from Sinatra to Rails

Integrate AI and ML technology to support mastery-driven adaptive learning

Scale systems to serve hundreds of thousands of learners
