About this role

Build and evolve server-driven UI services and shared component libraries for PENN Entertainment's gaming and sports betting platforms. Design GraphQL schemas in a federated architecture, optimize React/TypeScript frontends, and improve developer experience across a large monorepo.

Must have

At least 5 years of experience in software engineering

Strong JavaScript, TypeScript, and React skills with UX instincts

2+ years designing and evolving GraphQL schemas for multi-client product surfaces

Fluency with HTML, CSS, and browser environment including DOM and platform APIs

Solid foundation in computer science with data structures and algorithms

Experience with production systems at scale including load testing and tracing

Experience investigating and fixing production performance regressions

Experience on on-call rotation and owning release cycles end to end

Experience with API development in Node, Bun, or similar server frameworks

Experience building multi-client or white-label platforms

Experience with Kubernetes and operating services in containers

Comfortable with terminal, Git, GitHub, and modern editors

Experience with testing frameworks Jest, Vitest, or equivalent

Responsibilities

Design and evolve GraphQL schemas in a federated graph for server-driven UI

Classify breaking changes and coordinate migrations with mobile and web leads

Develop, scale, and optimize GraphQL APIs, RPC endpoints, and SQL queries

Build front-end applications and shared libraries with React and TypeScript

Build fast and accessible web applications for all users

Partner with product and design to architect and ship customer-facing features

Use observability tooling to diagnose issues and improve guest experience

Set up and refine monitoring and alerting in DataDog for owned systems

Find technical debt, propose fixes, and hold quality standards for the team

Identify bottlenecks and risks in production and drive platform scaling changes

Mentor teammates through code review, pairing, and documentation

Participate in collaborative agile design, architecture, and delivery

Write thorough tests for every feature and bug fix

Work with QA to strengthen automated testing pipelines and CI/CD workflows

Use Claude Code in daily development to accelerate work without lowering quality
